Organizations & Teams

Manage your organization and team members

Organizations are the top-level containers in Denied Platform. They hold your projects, policies, and team members. This guide covers everything you need to know about managing organizations effectively.

Overview

Every user in Denied belongs to at least one organization. Organizations provide:

  • Multi-tenancy — Isolate policies and data between different teams or clients
  • Team collaboration — Invite members and assign roles
  • Centralized management — Manage billing, settings, and access from one place

Your Organizations

To view your organizations:

  1. Go to SettingsOrganizations
  2. You'll see a list of all organizations you belong to
  3. Each card shows your role (Owner or Member) and the organization name

Switching Organizations

If you belong to multiple organizations, use the organization switcher in the top navigation to switch between them. Your current organization determines which projects and policies you see in the dashboard.

Creating an Organization

To create a new organization:

  1. Go to SettingsOrganizations
  2. Click Create Organization
  3. Enter an organization name
  4. Click Create

You'll automatically become the Owner of the new organization with full administrative permissions.

Choose a descriptive organization name that your team will recognize. Good examples: "Acme Corp", "Product Team", "Client XYZ".

Team Management

Viewing Members

To see who's in your organization:

  1. Go to SettingsOrganizations
  2. Select your organization
  3. View the Members list

Each member entry shows:

  • Name and email
  • Role (Owner or Member)
  • Status (Active or Pending)

Inviting Members

To invite someone to your organization:

  1. Go to SettingsOrganizations
  2. Select your organization
  3. Click Invite Member
  4. Enter their email address
  5. Click Send Invitation

The invited user will appear with a Pending status until they accept. They'll receive an email notification with instructions to join.

Make sure you enter the correct email address. Invitations are tied to specific email addresses, and the recipient must create an account with that exact email to accept.

Member Roles

Denied has two organization-level roles:

RolePermissions
OwnerFull administrative access. Can manage members, projects, billing, and organization settings. Can delete the organization.
MemberCan access projects and create/edit policies. Cannot manage billing, invite members, or change organization settings.

Changing Roles

To change a member's role:

  1. Go to SettingsOrganizations
  2. Select your organization
  3. Find the member in the list
  4. Click the role dropdown and select the new role

Be careful when changing roles. Demoting an Owner to Member removes their administrative access immediately.

Removing Members

To remove a member from your organization:

  1. Go to SettingsOrganizations
  2. Select your organization
  3. Find the member in the list
  4. Click Remove
  5. Confirm the removal

Removed members immediately lose access to all organization resources. They'll need a new invitation to rejoin.

Managing Invitations

Pending Invitations You've Sent

When you invite someone, they appear with Pending status until they accept. You can:

  • Wait for them to accept
  • Resend the invitation if needed
  • Cancel the invitation by removing them from the members list

Invitations You've Received

To see invitations from other organizations:

  1. Go to SettingsOrganizations
  2. Look for the Pending Invitations section

For each invitation, you can:

  • Accept — Join the organization and gain access to its projects
  • Decline — Reject the invitation (the sender will be notified)

Organization Settings

Organization Name

To rename your organization:

  1. Go to SettingsOrganizations
  2. Select your organization
  3. Edit the organization name
  4. Save changes

Deleting an Organization

To delete an organization:

  1. Go to SettingsOrganizations
  2. Select your organization
  3. Scroll to the danger zone
  4. Click Delete Organization
  5. Confirm by typing the organization name
  6. Click Delete

Only Owners can delete an organization. Consider transferring ownership or exporting data before deletion.

Best Practices

Organization Structure

  • One organization per company/team — Keep all related projects together
  • Separate organizations for clients — If you manage policies for multiple clients, use separate organizations for isolation
  • Use projects for environments — Instead of creating separate organizations for dev/staging/prod, use projects within one organization

Access Management

  • Limit Owner access — Only give Owner role to people who need administrative access
  • Regular audits — Periodically review your member list and remove inactive users
  • Use descriptive names — Help team members identify the right organization quickly

Security

  • Remove departed employees — When someone leaves your team, remove them from all organizations immediately
  • Be careful with invitations — Verify email addresses before sending invitations

Troubleshooting

Can't invite members?

  • Check that you have the Owner role
  • Verify the email address is correct
  • Ensure the email isn't already associated with an existing member

Member can't see projects?

  • Confirm they've accepted the invitation (status should be Active)
  • Check that they're in the correct organization
  • Verify the project exists and hasn't been deleted

Can't find an organization?

  • Check the organization switcher in the top navigation
  • Verify you haven't been removed from the organization
  • If you received an invitation, make sure you accepted it
  • Projects — Organize policies within your organization
  • Signing Up — Create your account and first organization
